Also though I've been trying a few ROMs for people so not all of these work perfectly. If you are still stuck, which I think gives a good range of popular games but isn't overwhelming. Look for lists of 'top MAME games' or something like that: Look through the compatibility lists for games which actually work. Look through romsites which allow sorting by number of downloads, the most downloaded games are the most popular ones. Personally I prefer to clrmamepro, the interface is much more user-friendly. This way you have one file for the working nonparent game, not two files, and you have one entry in the game list, not two entries where you just have to remember that one doesn't work. (the current FBA set doesn't work like this, sf2ce is a standalone ROM, this is the only example I could think of) If you must use a nonparent where the parent doesn't actually work, use a ROM manager to put the parent inside the nonparent, so you don't need to include the broken parent. However, some versions of MAME consider sf2ce to be a child ROM of sf2, so that is one of the few times you'd include a nonparent ROM. Like you said, you don't need a hundred versions of Street Fighter 2, so just sf2 will do. Only use parent ROMs unless there is a good reason to use a nonparent.
This gives me a great baseline to easily pull some great roms and clean up the junk. Much appreciated as I haven't had much luck getting the mamelist.xml for Don's Hyperspin Tools working or locating the catver and controls files working for ROMLister.

Should be able to get the full list across my downloaded sets of Mame Roms. I'll use the output to create a batch file to try and move the missing files from another rom set. I'm currently working on manipulating the data and then running a compare to see what I'm missing on the files it moved vs the files it tried to move. This is the great start and easy sort I was looking for.

Download MAME games, but first download an emulator to play MAME ROMS. I just installed retropie 3.7 from SD image and run emulationstation quite fine. Hi, I searched the internet for some retropie / mame information but was not really able to get a clear answer on this. Thanks for said in Newbie question about mame version and romset to use. With all the different front ends and romsets it's hard to get started. Any help or points in the right direction would be much appreciated. To me it seems like a long daunting task and I don't really know where to start.
I know I could do it manually but I'm not well versed in what's popular aside from a small handful of classics and with a handful of different versions of the same game, I don't even know what the best version to pick would be. Obviously 10 different versions of street fighter can seem a little overwhelming. So I'm wondering how everyone here cuts their list down to something a little more welcoming to their friends and family who are playing their system. I've seen tools and best of stuff floating around for Hyperspin but that stuff doesn't apply to Retropie. I tried using RomLister but ran into problems with not being able to find the catver and controls files to even get it to do anything. Some clones are fine like 2 player TMNT though. I'm looking for a couple hundred of the best/most popular games. I've searched around and around and tried out a couple of different things to try and cut my complete most recent set of lr-fba-next roms down to a less imposing set of games.
